ISO is an international body working on standartisation of certain practices. I(n this specific posting we will be talking about the document specification OOXML (Google Search) and specifically its inaplicability in todays world. Sta proposition for the standard from MS is 6000 pages big and describes so well what their office package can and cannot do it is almost scary. The whole proposition is so stuffed with atrocities which ensure “compatibility” with the older MS Office formats and whatever not that it scares the shit out of me. How does it sound to you that a standard proposes behaviour like autoSpaceLikeWord95 or useWord97LineBreakRules. Especially for me this is scary, very scary and frightening. It is not possible a proposed standard to impose such … profanities over the developers.

And just by the way there is already an approved standard for document format and it is called ODF. And as empty words are not enough it is already under ISO26300.

My questions:

  • Why there is a need for two standards for one and the same thing? One is enough especially if it is already properly specified.
  • How much money has been thrown so this jokish thing daring to call itself standard be forced with the short procedure?
  • What happens with licenses and IP?
  • Would you feel comfortable if you are forced to implement a thing that does not validate even in its specification as XML?

What can be done:
