Backblaze Blog : Sr. Accounting Manager: Cecilia

Sr. Accounting Manager: Cecilia
Someone has to keep track of all those $5 payments… Well, that and manage all of our accounting, finance, taxes, leases, and more. I am sooo happy to have the last of these items off my plate! Welcome Cecilia…

What attracted you to Backblaze?
Every time I met up with SBrian for lunch, he always seemed so happy at his job. I wanted to be that happy at my job. Now I am ;-)

Did you always meticulously backup data?
I have always planned to backup data, does that count? Now that I am at Backblaze, I really should.

Where are you originally from? Why did you move here?
I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. Came to the US after I graduated from college as part of my parents immigrancy application. I told my mom that I’m giving the US a 3-month trial period and if I didn’t like it, I am going back home. Well…20 some years later, I’m still here.

Favorite place you’ve traveled?
I always love going home to the Philippines. Aside from the Philippines, I would keep going back to Europe. We have been to France, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. There are still so many places to visit. UK, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Greece – those are the top places I would love to see next.

Favorite hobby?
I love to read, listen to music, workout, hike, and ride the bike (although I must say bikes don’t like me too much).

Of what achievement are you most proud?
My family – I have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 23 years, and we have two beautiful and amazing daughters, 21 and 17.

My favorite expression is:
Lord love a duck!

Please welcome her onboard!

Backblaze Blog : Backblaze turns 5 – a startup grows up

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

5 years old
Five years. That’s crazy. I can’t believe that it has been five years since Backblaze officially started. While some work started before then, the company was officially incorporated in Delaware on April 20, 2007.

When I think back to a few of us sitting in a one-bedroom apartment brainstorming about what we could possibly to do to help people stop losing data…it’s crazy to look around and see hundreds of servers, all of our employees, and the products, stats, and customers that make this all a reality today.

I wanted to share some of our adventures as we’ve grown from a tiny startup over the last five years:

1/15/07 – First thoughts around what to do about people losing data.
4/20/07 – Incorporated in Delaware.
Incorporation

6/10/07 – Original discussion about “funding” the company by 5 partners working 1 year without salary.
8/25/07 – Brian’s 1-bedroom apartment looking more like an office.

1/29/08 – Decide we want to do a video. Get our friend Cara to be the “actress”.
Cara video

We created three “official” videos that day: Deadly Plagues, How it Works, and Talk with Gleb. However, the outtakes with Cara were probably the best.

2/5/08 – Gleb’s laptop dies; becomes first person to restore an unrecoverable file.

This computer is still alive four years later…but barely.

2/15/08 – Website goes live for the first time.
First website

3/18/08 – Service given to test to a few people.
4/18/08 – Billing implemented.

5/13/08 – Internal admin dashboard online shows 4 paid customer and 46 trials.
5/21/08 – 20 1TB hard drives arrive to be assembled into 4-drive enclosures.

5/26/08 – Backblaze shown to TechCrunch, Ars Technica, and SimpleHelp
6/2/08 – Private beta launch! TechCrunch, Ars Technica, SimpleHelp, and KillerStartups write!
8/12/08 – Fly out to D.C. to meet Walt Mossberg who decides not to write. We fly back with hurt egos.
8/26/08 – Powered on first Storage Pod made of plywood in datacenter.

11/20/08 – Backblaze experiments with a radio ad on “Energy 92.7″.
12/7/08 – Backblaze website visitors come from all over; almost 50% from outside U.S.

12/9/08 – Beta launch of the Mac version. Crazy amount of interest!
12/15/08 – First DVD restore ordered.

6/4/10 – 100th Backblaze Storage Pod placed into production.

Sourcenext
Backblaze launches in a big way in Japan today. We have partnered with Sourcenext to offer our unlimited online backup service to the Japanese market.

The service provided in Japan still provides automatic backup, unlimited storage, unthrottled bandwidth, robust encryption, restore via download or USB drive, Locate My Computer, and more for one flat rate. Additionally, the entire service is localized into Japanese.

Noriyuki Matsuda, founder and CEO of Sourcenext, came to the US a couple months ago and said that his technical people scour the world for the best products to bring to the Japanese market. In 2010, they picked Evernote (one of my favorite services) to bring to Japan. This year they picked Backblaze online backup as a must-have for Japan.

I am thrilled to be partnering with Sourcenext to help every Japanese person keep their photos, music, movies, work files, etc. safe from drive crashes and other data loss.

Backblaze Blog : The REAL story behind how Backblaze can afford unlimited storage for $5/month

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

We told you the reason our online backup service could offer unlimited storage for just $5/month was as a result of our incredibly efficient cloud storage built on our custom-designed and open-sourced Storage Pod hardware.

But, here’s the REAL story:

Backblaze Blog : Today is World Backup Day 2012:Backup and help your friends.

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

It has arrived. This holiday has no painted eggs, no tree, no turkey, and no costumes. But it does have gifts: an iPad, five 1-year unlimited online backup licenses and more. More importantly, it has the ability to save your memories and give you the undying love of your friends, family, and co-workers.

While 94% of computer users do not regularly backup their data, if you’re reading this you are likely among the few who do. (And if you’re not, please start your free trial of Backblaze. It takes nothing more than entering an email address/picking a password, and clicking download.)

However, if you look around, almost none of the other people you know and love backup their data. Help them.

Tell them how easy it is.
Tell them why you do it.
Tell them to do it now, not after they’ve lost all their photos.

A cure for cancer was lost, companies have shut down, and lots and lots of people have gone through the 5 stages of grieving…all because they simply didn’t backup their data.

Take a moment and help your friends with the 1-minute task of making sure their photos, music, movies, and memories are safe. And if your friends start a free trial by April 2nd, 2012…they’ll also be entered to win a new iPad and one of 5 free one-year subscriptions. Backblaze Blog : Quick maintenance at 2pm PDT

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

Our online backup service will have a 30 minute maintenance at 2pm PDT today (Tuesday 3/13/12.) This is a slight finish up after last week’s maintenance.

During this maintenance, some parts of our service will be affected:
* Restores and access to My Account will be unavailable.
* Creating new accounts will be unavailable. We will provide a form to enter your email address to be notified when maintenance is complete.
* Backups that are in process will continue unless interrupted by your computer shutting down or your Internet connection losing connectivity.
* Buying will be unavailable on our website. However, it will be possible to purchase annual licenses on Amazon.

After the maintenance completes, there will be a ramp up period during which backups will start that may last up to an hour for some users. Thank you for your patience!

Update: Maintenance is done! 22 minutes total – just slightly ahead of schedule. As mentioned above, backups will take up to one hour for some users to restart.

Backblaze Blog : Maintenance Tuesday and Wednesday

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

Backblaze is upgrading its central systems, which will take place in two phases:

* Tuesday 3/6/12 for about one hour sometime at 2pm PST.
* Wednesday 3/7/12 for two to three hours starting at 2pm PST.

Due to massive growth, we are tripling the storage on those systems.

Our storage farm scales infinitely without downtime by adding Storage Pods, which we do all the time. However, expanding our central systems will require a couple small maintenance windows to perform the upgrade.

We appreciate you backing up your data with us and your patience as we do this maintenance to allow us to continue our rapid growth.

Update: Tuesday maintenance will start between 3pm and 5pm PST.

Update: Tuesday maintenance is complete. Thank you engineering and ops teams!

Update: Wednesday maintenance is complete. Thank you engineering and ops teams!

Thank you also to you for your patience as we scale up!

Backblaze Blog : Backblaze release 2.0.2

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

Backblaze has made a new release available and all users are scheduled to be automatically upgraded over the next few weeks. Below are the enhancements in this release:

Release Date: 3/01/12
Version: 2.0.2
Auto-Update: All Users

• Added “End Time” to “Backup Schedule of type ‘Once Per Day’”
While the default (and recommended) approach is to backup “Continuously”, Backblaze now offers the ability to specify a specific start and end time for backup. This is particularly useful for customers who pay different amounts for bandwidth at different times.

• Streamlined Backblaze for Business billing notifications
Previously individual users in a Backblaze for Business account would receive notifications when the business’s subscription was expiring. Now, only the administrator of the business account will be notified. If the account has not been renewed within 15 days of expiration, the individual users will be notified and asked to contact their administrator.

• Improved Japanese Translations
Major revamp of the Japanese language throughout the client.

• New icon in client “Restore…” dialog for “USB Flash Drive” restore option
Icon updated to match the switch from DVD to USB Flash Drive restore.

• Removed ability to run installer on Mac OS X 10.4 (Mac)
With Apple not issuing updates for Mac OS X 10.4 since 2007, Backblaze is starting to phase out support for 10.4. Existing customers running OS X 10.4 will continue to be able to run Backblaze v1.5.3, but will not be receiving updates.

Backblaze Blog : Director of Product Marketing: Andy

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

Thanks to our great customers, Backblaze continues to grow. We are excited to announce that we have hired a Director of Product Marketing. Let’s spend a few minutes with Andy…

Where are you from? And where are you now?
I was born in Brooklyn New York and grew up on Long Island in Shirley, exit 67 on the Long Island Expressway – way out there. I spent 10 years in the Air Force and moved to California when I got out.

Why did you leave the Air Force?
I was a computer programmer in the Air Force. I nearly tripled my salary when I got out. My first job in California was at a start-up as a Systems Administrator. I’ve loved start-ups ever since.

How did you get into product marketing?
I kept going to college at night and eventually crossed over to the dark side (marketing) when I got my MBA.

Any regrets in crossing over to the dark side?
No. I stay reasonably technical; I’ve built and maintain a couple of web sites and do a little programming on the side. I believe you can’t market technology unless you understand technology, so I try to “keep dirty”.

Why join Backblaze?
I’ve used the online backup service for over a year and it just works. I visit my backed up files every once in a while – they seem happy. Seriously, I have to believe in what I’m marketing. It’s clear from all the customer kudos that Backblaze is really good at what they do.

Where else have you worked?
I’ve worked in companies of all sizes from PeopleSoft and Symantec down to start-ups. All of them have been in the technology industry.

OK, one last question – you had a fun first car?
My first car was a 1958 Cadillac, Fleetwood sixty-special. I paid $125 for the car and it weighed 6,000 pounds and got 8 miles a gallon. We once got 15 people in it, plus 3 in the trunk, to get into a $5.00 a car drive-in movie. I still think we could have gotten 2 more folks in the trunk.

Backblaze Blog : The DVD is dead.USB flash drive restores are here.

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

DVDs were a fantastic storage medium, able to store an astounding 4.7 GB of data for a few dollars. That was 1995. Yahoo was the hottest company on the Web. Google, Facebook, and Twitter weren’t even a concept yet. DVDs had a good run.

It’s time to call them dead.

  • Netflix, iTunes, and Amazon streaming removed our need for DVD videos.
  • Blockbuster stores are “moving“…online.
  • Applications have been downloaded over the net for years.
  • Even with the OS, the latest version from Apple was only available via download.
  • The first MacBook Air announced Jan ’08 without even the option of a DVD player.
  • CES declared this the “Year of the Ultrabook“; none of those PCs offer a DVD player.
  • When we launched Backblaze online backup in mid-2008, we offered unlimited free restores, FedEx DVD restores for $99, and FedEx USB hard drive restores for $189. We didn’t know how many people would choose the DVD restore option, but we figured people understood the concept of getting files sent to them on DVDs and they may feel more comfortable this way.

Well with 600,000,000 files restored in 2011, Backblaze customers restored:

  • 8,000 times more often by downloading.
  • 50 times more often via USB hard drives than DVDs.
  • Today we are killing off DVD restores and replacing them with USB flash drives.

For the same $99 price, you can now:

  • Restore 28 GB of data (7 DVDs worth) on a USB flash drive FedEx’ed to you.
  • Reuse the flash drive when you’re done with your restore.
  • Get your data on your MacBook, ultra book, or any other USB-enabled computer.
  • It was a good run DVD, but it’s time to move on.

While I wish that everyone would backup their data, the reality is for many people it takes a specific event to occur. (Unfortunately, that moment for most people is data loss.) For Kirk, that moment was starting to work at Backblaze.

In a crazy coincidence, immediately after starting work and signing up with our online backup service, Kirk had a system crash:

Just had a great first-hand experience using backblaze to restore my corrupted iTunes Library.itl and .xml. I have been working on my home computer and having memory issues that messed up right in the middle of an iTunes update. It corrupted the iTunes xml and itl files. To restore I merely asked for those 2 files from backblaze and had a zip file in SECONDS. I copied them in and voila, my itunes is up an running.

I saw on the mac support site where lots of folks had this issue so another great selling point! (not to mention we back up the entire iTunes music library as well!)

Here are the Mac Forums discussion Kirk mentions with lots of people having issues and the related Apple support URL for how to recreate iTunes library and playlists.

Maybe we should hire everyone out there to get them to backup?

Backblaze Blog : Director of Web Services: Kirk

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

I’m excited to announce we have hired a Director of Web Services (a position which morphed just slightly from the original title of Sr. Systems Administrator.) Below is a short interview with the latest addition to the Backblaze family: Kirk.

Where are you originally from? Why did you move here?

I was born in Washington D.C. and lived in Maryland for my first 37 years. In 1987 I got an opportunity to come out here to work for one year and I could bring the family. We fell in love with this area then but after the one year we returned to Maryland. In 1997 we moved out here after I got sick of the weather and pollen every year. It was a big move for us and since I was the main driver for the move I had to answer all the complaints about why we moved, etc. Fun!

    Favorite place you’ve traveled?

My wife and I love driving trips and we have spent several vacations on the road. We drove on what is left of route 66 from LA out to Texas taking every side road and that was an awesome trip. We also drove to Mount Rushmore, seeing that awesome site. I love to drive. It represents true freedom, and boy, what a great big country we have!

Where do you go to think?

Driving! I figure things out while driving.

    What is your personal mantra?

“I feel happy, I feel healthy, I feel terrific” I know its weird but I went to this seminar once that said if you said this out loud 5 times in a row daily it would make you feel better. Son-of-a-gun it works!

Were you always interested in technology?

YES! I grew up in the age of the astronaut in the 60′s and when I was a little kid that’s all I wanted to be. The space program was everything to me. I used to rig up my bedroom and turn it into a space capsule with any gadget I could find. A transistor radio, and an old cassette recorder made up my command console. I would take a dining room chair and flip it on its back up against the bed so I could lay with my head on the floor and legs up on the bed with my technology besides me making a “capsule”. As I got older and began college my first job and where I stayed the next 18 years was working at Goddard Space Flight Center for a contractor to NASA. Being around all this customer hardware and computers that filled whole rooms was so cool. I learned to operate all the equipment for the LANDSAT ground system. I went on to support other missions in various positions even working on a space shuttle mission at the JPL in Pasadena.

Of what achievement are you most proud?

Work/technical achievement: I wrote a paper called the “System Test Risk Assessment Measure” which I presented at International Test Conferences and it won the Best paper in the computer Sciences category where I worked. It was the first and only paper on QA ever to win the award in the computer science category.

Personal – I have suffered from being overweight my entire life . finally at 325 pounds I began to look after myself and work out losing 60 pounds and I continue to workout 4 times a week.

Backblaze Blog : 2011: A few of my favorite things…

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

I can’t believe we’re already over a week into 2012. In the interest of listening to the quote “perfect is the enemy of good”, I am publishing these thoughts on Backblaze in 2011 now rather than waiting until my hindsight is perfect, which may take another year or more. So, without further hesitation, here are a a few of my favorite things from 2011:

    1. Growing sales about 100%.
We’re in a market growing about 30% per year. Growing 3x faster than the market is a bit of nice external validation that the passion we put into helping people backup data is working.

    2. Adding some awesome people to our team.
I’m looking at you SBrian, Ken, Yev, and Tasha. We continue to run lean, but have added some amazing people to help us as we scale.

    3. Restoring 600,000,000 files.
Ok, if you want to be technical, we restored 598,652,186 files. That is an astounding number of photos, documents, and other critical files that customers lost and then restored in a single year. I remember how upset I was four years ago when I lost a single calendar file; and how thrilled I was to realize that I had been running the beta version of Backblaze and was able to recover it. It is hard to imagine the total emotion resulting from the recovery of those 600 million files.

    4. Launching “Locate My Computer”.
After Mark Bao caught the thief who stole his laptop by downloading the thief’s video from Backblaze and Mat Miller recovered his laptop by restoring the thief’s college paper, we launched a free addition to the service: Locate My Computer. Just one month later, that feature helped crack an Argentinian counterfeiting ring and recover $1 million in counterfeit cash.

    5. Launching “Backblaze v2.0: Unlimiting Unlimited”.
Listening to your requests, we added the ability to backup unlimited file types and unlimited file sizes. Backblaze v2.0 added a host of other enhancements that increased how quickly your data gets backed up. Video editors and virtual machine users cheered.

    6. Open sourcing “Backblaze Storage Pod v2.0″.
When we initially open sourced the Backblaze Storage Pod, we figured five or six people might care. Instead, over 1 million people read the blog post and hundreds of companies and organizations started building these pods. In 2011, we published the designs for Backblaze Storage Pod v2.0 (which had twice the space and performance for the same cost) and a number of lessons learned.

    7. Crowdsourcing our first billboard.
Historically we have grown almost entirely organically, but wanted to experiment with a billboard on Highway 101. We decided to crowdsource the billboard. You came up with hundreds of ideas and voted on your favorite. December 19th, our first billboard went live: “Kiss your lost files hello

    8. Adding Restore Downloader apps.
A small but very welcome addition was a downloader app for each of Mac and Windows, enabling you to download a huge restore.

    9. Recommitting to unlimited.
In February, one of our competitors said it was impossible to continue offering unlimited online backup because people were storing more data. We strongly disagreed and recommitted to unlimited.

    10. Moving to our new office.
Technically we moved in December of 2010, but it was in 2011 that we settled in to our new downtown San Mateo space.

What happens in 2012? We’re going to:
    …need more great people.
…enhance the product while continuing to stay laser-focused on simplicity.
…further innovate cloud storage costs to continue offering unlimited online backup.
…expand the ways that people can get Backblaze on their computers.

Backblaze Blog : Give friends peace of mind for the holidays – and get a hotel night or free flight

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

Peace of mind means different things to different people. It might be knowing you can get the song your baby falls asleep to when you’re traveling or being able to find your lost or stolen computer.

At Backblaze, we believe that peace of mind comes from never having to worry about losing the video of your newborn’s first smile, the photo of your uncle passed out at Thanksgiving last year, or oops, that presentation you just deleted.

This holiday season, give the gift of peace of mind from Backblaze.

… And get rewarded for your generosity in return.

Every gift license purchased between now and midnight this Cyber Monday, automatically enters you into a drawing for your choice of hotel or flight ($250 gift card) for a little extra peace of mind of your own.

Can’t decide who to bestow with your generosity? Follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook to be entered into a drawing for a free year of Backblaze.

So kick up your feet and relax, we’ve got you and your friends covered.

    * Anyone is eligible.
    * Licenses can be used for new accounts only
    * License is valid for one year of unlimited backup
    * Contests end at 11.59 PM PST on November 28th, 2011

Backblaze Blog : Welcome Backify customers

This post was syndicated from: Backblaze Blog and was written by: Gleb Budman. Original post: at Backblaze Blog

Drama tends to be reserved for reality TV. Or sometimes for Valleywag.

But the last couple of days there has been some drama in the backup space.

About a month ago, “Backify” launched an online backup service claiming to offer 512 GB for free. That surprised me and others and I was curious as to how they could offer that. Well in the last two days the answer came back as “they couldn’t”.

As it turns out, Backify was reselling another service called LiveDrive. That company sent an email to all Backify customers claiming Backify was being fraudulent. Backify sent an email to their customers saying LiveDrive’s service was broken. Unclear what actually happened, but bad for customers backing up their data regardless.

Lifehacker includes both emails here: “You Should Probably Stop Using Backify

This morning, the Backify homepage changed to say: “Backify is no longer in service”. The company suggests users try Backblaze for unlimited storage for data backups.

We very much appreciate the recommendation and are happy to welcome all Backify customers who wish to protect their data with online backup. While Backify pitched a free service, Backblaze online backup does have a fee. We are $5/month, $50/year, or $95/two years (i.e. $3.96/month). For this, Backblaze provides automatic, unlimited backup with unlimited storage and unthrottled bandwidth.

Backify customers can try Backblaze free and get 10% off when buying:
    * Download the free two-week trial at www.backblaze.com
    * Use code “backify” by Nov 28, 2011 to get 10% off your initial purchase.

We hope that we can pick up your online backup needs where Backify left off, and as we are unlimited and unthrottled, we can get you backed up and protected quickly!

    Meet the Backblaze Peloton.
    From Wikipedia:

The peloton travels as an integrated unit, like birds flying in formation, each rider making slight adjustments in response to the riders around him or her…

I would say we started a Backblaze biking group because of the inherent efficiency, teamwork, and performance of a well-executing peloton; that this is both a way to develop our team and to demonstrate it’s excellence; that this was perfectly timed to coincide with Backblaze 2.0: The Performance Release

    But, realistically, it’s just fun.

Want one of these fancy Backblaze bike jerseys?
In the comments below, on our Facebook page, or on Twitter simply finish the sentence:

    “Backblaze is faster than…”

    For example,
    * Backblaze is faster than a cheetah jumping off a rocket ship.
    * Backblaze is faster than a spinning hard drive.
    * Backblaze is faster than a DeLorean hitting 88 mph.

We’ll pick our favorite and send you a jersey!
